Every Sunday I light a candle, open my planner, and convince myself that THIS week I become a functional adult. By Tuesday the candle is out and so am I.

You know the routine. You've probably done it yourself. You've definitely watched someone else do it on TikTok at 11pm on a Saturday while eating cereal out of a mug because all your bowls are in the sink (which, by the way, you're going to clean tomorrow during The Reset™).

So let's talk about it. The Sunday reset. The weekly ritual that has somehow convinced an entire generation that vibes and a labeled spice rack can fix late-stage capitalism.

The Fantasy vs. The Reality

In the fantasy, I wake up at 7:45 (not 7:00 — I'm not insane). Soft golden light is streaming through curtains I definitely own. I do yoga. I journal. I make a smoothie that contains spinach AND looks photogenic. I plan my week in a leather-bound notebook with a fountain pen I've never used. By noon, my apartment is a Pinterest board and my mind is a Tibetan monastery.

In the reality, I wake up at 11:14 with mascara crust in my left eye and a vague memory of texting someone I shouldn't have. I scroll TikTok for ninety minutes watching other women do their Sunday resets, which somehow counts as research. I drink coffee while standing up. I get The Ambition around 3pm. By 4pm, I'm crying into a Container Store cart.

There is actual psychology behind this, by the way. Apparently aesthetic productivity routines are literally designed as performances, not tools — meaning the whole industry has been built around how my life looks rather than how my brain actually works. Cool. Cool cool cool. So when I'm spending $94 on matching jars, I'm not "investing in my future" — I'm cosplaying as someone who has their life together. Got it. (This is, for the record, the same energy that built me an entire subscription graveyard — a monument to all the aspirational versions of myself I've paid for monthly and never become.)

The Pasta Situation

Now let's discuss meal prep, my greatest enemy and most consistent lie.

In my head: five gorgeous Mason jars filled with rainbow salads, marinated proteins, and grain bowls that would make a wellness influencer weep. In reality: three sad identical Tupperwares of the same pasta, because by the time I got to the actual cooking part, I had already used up my Sunday energy budget on rearranging my bookshelf by color (more on this in a second).

Deep Cleaning: The Most Elegant Procrastination

Here is my favorite Sunday reset move, and possibly my villain origin story: deep-cleaning my apartment as a form of avoiding everything I actually need to do.

I have, on multiple Sundays, done the following instead of, say, answering emails or doing my taxes:

  • Reorganized every drawer in the kitchen
  • Alphabetized my spices (twice)
  • Cleaned the inside of the toaster with a Q-tip
  • Bleached grout I didn't know existed
  • Watched a 90-minute video about a stranger's closet renovation in Utah

This is real, certified procrastination dressed up in a French girl apron. And the worst part? It FEELS productive. My brain releases little dopamine confetti every time I wipe down a baseboard. Meanwhile, the thing I'm actually avoiding — the email, the tax form, the awkward conversation — is still sitting there, untouched, waiting for Monday me to deal with it. Monday me hates Sunday me. Sunday me does not care.

The Dread Always Wins

Here's the thing nobody tells you about Sunday resets: the dread still comes. Like clockwork. Around 6:47pm. Right when the sky goes that particular shade of "the weekend is over and you have not, in fact, become a new person."

I can light fifteen candles. I can have meal-prepped a Michelin-starred week. My planner can look like a stationery influencer's dream. And still — STILL — at 6:47pm sharp, my body remembers that tomorrow I have to be a person with responsibilities, and my cortisol does its little Sunday-night tap dance.

Turns out Sunday evening cortisol spikes are an actual biological response — wait, I already used that one. Anyway, science agrees: my body is doing this on purpose. The reset doesn't actually reset the dread. It just decorates the dread.

And honestly? Part of why we keep doing it is because TikTok and Instagram have turned weekly routines into cinematic content — color-coded calendars and slow mornings edited with soft filters to make our chores feel like a movie. It's the exact same comparison culture trap that makes a stranger's Tuesday look like my dream Sunday. Which is sweet, in a tragic way. We're all just trying to be the main character of a life that mostly involves answering Slack messages.

Making Peace With The Pretty Lie

Here's where I've landed, after years of failed resets and approximately $3,400 in unused organizational products:

My Sunday reset does not reset anything. It does not make me more productive. It does not stop the Sunday scaries. It does not transform me into a person who meal preps for real or wakes up at 7am or remembers to take vitamins.

But — and stay with me here — it does feel nice. The candle smells good. The clean sheets are objectively superior to dirty sheets. The planner, even if I abandon it by Wednesday, gives me ninety minutes of feeling like I'm in charge of my own life. And in a world that feels mostly out of control, ninety minutes of pretend control is... actually kind of valuable?

The trick, I think, is to stop expecting the reset to do something it was never going to do. It's not going to fix my anxiety, my career, my finances, or the fact that I have not opened the third drawer of my desk since 2022. It's just a little ritual. A vibe. A weekly act of theater starring me as Someone Who Has It Together.

And maybe that's enough. Maybe the whole point isn't the reset working — it's the small, quiet hope that this week, this week, might be slightly less chaotic than the last.
